Deutschland-Ticket: validity, price and cancellation

Plan regional travel in Germany: where the Deutschland-Ticket works, why it does not normally cover ICE trains, and how its subscription works.

Last reviewed:

Deutschland-Ticket: local and regional travel, second class, monthly subscription.
General scope only: ordinary ICE, IC and EC journeys are excluded; check specific exceptions and seller terms.

Where you can travel

The Deutschland-Ticket covers participating local and regional public transport in Germany in second class, including RE, RB, S-Bahn, underground trains, trams and buses. It is personal and non-transferable. Check the complete journey: a connection shown in a planner can combine covered regional services with a long-distance leg that needs a separate ticket.

ICE, IC and EC are generally excluded

Do not board an ICE, IC, EC or FlixTrain using only a Deutschland-Ticket. Limited exceptions depend on an explicitly accepted service and route section; an RE label alone is not sufficient where a long-distance operator runs the train. Use the local-transport filter and read the validity information for the actual service.

A monthly subscription, not a holiday day pass

The DB product page checked on 11 October 2026 lists EUR 63 per month. This is a dated reference, not a fare offered by GermanyTrain. DB states that cancellation by the 10th ends the subscription at the end of that calendar month; later cancellation ends it at the end of the following month. Check the current seller terms and retain the cancellation confirmation.

Combining it with a separate ICE ticket

A regional journey using the Deutschland-Ticket and a separately booked ICE journey are not automatically one protected through journey. DB warns that a regional delay does not automatically lift the train restriction on that separate long-distance ticket. Leave extra transfer time and compare a through ticket when a missed connection would be costly.

Children, companions and bicycles

The ticket belongs to one named passenger. Children under 6 travel free; from age 6 they need their own travel entitlement. An adult’s Deutschland-Ticket does not include a child aged 6–14 under DB’s long-distance family rule. Bicycles follow local fares and capacity restrictions, so check every operator on your route.

Plan by calendar month

A subscription is organised by calendar month, not by a rolling 30-day holiday. Check its start month and cancellation deadline before ordering. A trip crossing a month boundary may need two monthly entitlements. Save the ticket for inspection and the seller’s cancellation confirmation; deleting an app is not a cancellation request.

Questions about this guide

Can I switch to ICE for free when my regional train is late?

Generally no. The Deutschland-Ticket is excluded from the usual reimbursement rule for upgrading from regional to long-distance trains. You need a separate ICE ticket; narrowly defined late-night or last-connection exceptions have additional conditions. Check DB’s passenger-rights guidance before buying.

Is the Deutschland-Ticket still EUR 49?

No. The DB page checked on 11 October 2026 lists EUR 63 per month. Older references to a 49-euro ticket are not a current price quote.

Does it include a seat reservation?

No. It is a local and regional travel entitlement, not a reserved seat or a long-distance rail pass.
