German Rail Pass, Interrail or individual tickets?

Compare rail passes with individual train tickets and the Deutschland-Ticket by eligibility, travel days, reservations and route coverage.

Last reviewed:

Three rail-pass checks: eligibility, travel days and total cost.
Compare the specific pass and any required reservations with individual tickets.

Begin with your residency and itinerary

DB’s current German Rail Pass is for travellers living outside Germany. Select your actual country of residence and carry the required evidence; nationality alone may not settle eligibility. For a wider European itinerary, compare the Interrail Global Pass and its home-country restrictions with the German Rail Pass’s participating routes. A German pass is not an unrestricted Europe-wide ticket.

Count travel days and reservation costs

List each long-distance travel day and check whether your pass uses consecutive or selected days. Add reservations required or desired on your exact services; a pass is not a seat allocation. International and night trains can have extra conditions or limited reservation availability. Check those services before committing to a pass-based itinerary.

Compare with individual tickets

For a small number of fixed journeys, compare the actual individual fares for the same dates, class and passengers against the total pass cost. A pass can be useful when the itinerary is intensive or flexible, but it is not automatically cheaper. Include activation, cancellation and validity rules in the decision rather than comparing only the headline price.

Keep the Deutschland-Ticket separate

The Deutschland-Ticket is a local and regional subscription, not an ICE pass. It may suit slower regional trips, but it does not replace the long-distance entitlement needed for most fast intercity journeys. Do not assume an intercity pass includes every local bus or underground journey either: check each product’s network and operator coverage.

Eurail is now part of the Interrail name

The provider brought Eurail and Interrail together under the Interrail brand in September 2026, including for travellers living outside Europe. Previously issued Eurail passes remain usable under their original validity and conditions. Do not choose a pass using an old Europe-versus-non-Europe brand rule; use the current product and residence rules shown by the provider.

Questions about this guide

Can someone living in Germany buy the German Rail Pass?

No. The current product requires residence outside Germany. Check other domestic fares or a suitable international pass with its separate home-country rules.

Which pass is always cheapest?

There is no universal cheapest option. Compare eligible products with date-specific individual fares and include the reservations and local journeys you need.
