Flexible or tied to a train?
Discounted long-distance fares may be tied to specified trains. More flexible fares can have different conditions and prices. Read the actual fare rules before purchase, including refund deadlines and any fees.
Seat reservations
A valid ticket does not always include a seat reservation. Reservations can be useful on busy long-distance trains. International services and special offers may follow different rules; check before paying.
Regional passes and children
Check the current scope, subscription terms and cancellation rules of regional passes, including the Deutschland-Ticket. Do not use a regional pass for long-distance travel unless the specific service is explicitly included. Children’s eligibility depends on the ticket and accompanying passengers.
Children on domestic DB long-distance tickets
Children under 6 travel free. On eligible domestic DB long-distance fares, up to four children aged 6–14 can travel free with a person aged 15 or over, but the children must be added when booking. A free child fare does not guarantee a seat. Regional tickets, City-Ticket use and international journeys can have different rules.
Questions about this guide
Is a seat reservation enough to board the train?
No. You also need a ticket or pass valid for the train, route, class and date. Keep both travel and reservation details available.
Does a free child ticket include a reserved seat?
No. Include the child in the booking and check whether a separate seat reservation is needed for your fare and train.
