Confirm Berlin Hbf as the actual stop
Berlin has several long-distance stations. Your train may call at Hauptbahnhof, Südkreuz, Spandau or another stop depending on its route. Match the station on your ticket and consider which arrival fits your accommodation. Do not treat a connection between two different Berlin stations as an ordinary same-platform transfer.
Platforms are on different levels
At Berlin Hauptbahnhof, railway tracks 1–8 are on the lower level and tracks 11–16 on the upper level. “Berlin Hbf (tief)” refers to the lower part of the same station, not a separate city station. A connection between the levels needs walking and escalator or lift time. Use the current departure display for your train’s platform.
Plan the next leg through the city
Use the exact city destination when searching onward S-Bahn, underground, tram or bus journeys. Check whether local transport is included in your fare or requires a separate ticket. Long-distance rail tickets do not automatically cover every urban trip. Allow for the walk between the arrival platform and local departure point, especially with luggage.
Use station facilities as current information
Check the official station map for toilets, lockers, service points and accessible routes. Facilities can be temporarily unavailable; do not promise a particular locker size or an operating lift from an older guide. Recheck the train number, carriage section and departure display shortly before boarding, and use operator assistance when a connection changes.
Questions about this guide
Can I assume my next train is on the same level?
No. Check the platform for each train. Moving between upper and lower levels can require additional walking and lift time.
