Munich Hauptbahnhof: arrivals, transfers and onward travel

Plan a transfer at München Hbf, account for construction and walking routes, and connect to city transport or a Bavarian day trip.

Munich and München refer to the same city

Journey planners may display the German name München Hbf. Confirm it rather than selecting München Ost, Pasing or an airport station by mistake. Some journeys can use those other stops legitimately, but the ticket and itinerary must match. For accommodation or an airport transfer, search the full onward destination rather than stopping the plan at Hbf.

Allow time for works and longer walks

Construction at Munich’s main station can affect entrances and walking routes. Check the current station map and notices before travel, especially when changing between mainline platforms and local transport. A transfer that appears short in the timetable may be uncomfortable with heavy luggage or reduced mobility. Confirm lift availability and assistance arrangements when needed.

Onward S-Bahn and underground journeys

Follow the signs for the specific S-Bahn or underground service and check its direction. A long-distance ticket to München Hbf does not automatically include every onward urban journey. Compare your fare’s local-transport entitlement with the ticket needed for the exact destination. Airport journeys need their own station and fare checks; the airport is not part of the main station.

Starting a day trip in Bavaria

For a regional day trip, compare the exact departure, transfers and return journey before buying a regional ticket. Some destinations require an onward bus or walk from the railway station. Check whether each operator is included and whether weekday start-time restrictions apply. A regional pass is not a substitute for an ICE ticket merely because the destination is in Bavaria.

Check access routes before choosing a meeting point

The city’s main-station redevelopment covers the reception building, Starnberg wing station and forecourts. Use a current station map and a clearly named service point for meeting companions. Do not plan around a remembered entrance or construction completion date; recheck the walking route and accessible alternative for the day you travel.
